"In the immortal words of the Grateful Dead, ‘Lately it occurs to me what a long, strange trip it's been’. I have been living in New York City since February 2008. I am the Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at Columbia University.

"After graduating from Kimball I went to Southwestern University in Georgetown where I majored in Chemistry and had lots of fun in the hill country. In my senior year I married Elizabeth Thompson who was a Richardson High School Graduate and a college student at Stephen F. Austin. After college we moved to Chicago for more school and to have an out-of-Texas adventure. Chicago was really an adventure; we discovered ethnic foods and learned that you had to winterize a Volkswagen! I was in both the medical school and graduate school at the University of Illinois Medical Center campus and finished med school in 1977 and received my PhD in Pharmacology (biochemistry) in 1979. Elizabeth graduate from the University Of Illinois College of Pharmacy in 1977. We moved back to Dallas for a year and I did my internship in Pediatrics at UT Southwestern and Dallas Children's Hospital. After that another adventure, we moved to Salt Lake City for more training, this time in infectious diseases. We lived there for three years and our daughter Lindsey was born in 1980. In 1982, a mere 12 years after graduating from Kimball we moved to Cincinnati and my first "real" job as an assistant professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the University of Cincinnati and the Children's Hospital. Cincinnati was a really nice place, our son Martin was born there in 1985 and Elizabeth went to graduate school in Pharmacy and got a doctoral degree in 1987. We all enjoyed the rolling hills of southern Ohio and northern Kentucky and Lindsey and Martin became addicted to travel, our real hobby. One of the highlights was spending most of a year in Europe while I was on a sabbatical leave in Belgium.

"In 2000, I was offered the job at UTMB, I was ready for a move and while not specifically looking to come back to Texas the fact that the job was in Texas was a real plus. We loved living on Galveston Island, it was great except for the occasional hurricane and evacuation. In 2008, I was offered the position at Columbia and we moved to Manhattan. We were fortunate in that we sold our house on the island and moved to NYC before Hurricane Ike devastated the island. Our (former) house took 2-3 feet of water - very sad. The city and the job are exciting and Elizabeth is chief of pharmacy for the VA Hospital System in New Jersey. New York has so much going on that it is incredible but we found one thing it lacks - truely authentic Tex-Mex - oh well.

"Both our children are doing well. Lindsey graduated from high school in Cincinnati in 1999, and then graduated with honors from the College of Communications at Boston University. She is currently working as an assistant editor at Martha Stewart’s publishing company in New York City. In October 2009 she married Ken Partridge, a college friend and also in publishing. They live in Brooklyn and really enjoy the Big Apple.

"Martin graduated from Ball High School in Galveston in 2004. For reasons that are a complete mystery to me he selected to go to Southwestern University for college! After college Martin graduated from Law School at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland and is now working as an attorney with a labor law firm in Manhattan. He lives in an apartment less than a mile from his sister in Brooklyn.

"Anyway, it has been a long strange trip since leaving Kimball all those years ago. I am sending all you Knights my warmest wishes."
