"After graduating from Kimball, I had no clear vision for my life in mind. I was not ready for college, but did not want to go to Viet Nam. With a draft status of 1-A, career opportunities were limited. However, I found a job working on a survey crew for the City of Dallas, which lasted until my draft notice arrived. Rather than a take my chances in the Army, I enlisted in the Air Force. My overseas experience was limited to Japan and Okinawa.
"Upon discharge in 1971, I returned home and reclaimed my job with the City of Dallas. Taking advantage of the G.I. Bill, I enrolled in college and eventually earned a bachelor's degree from Dallas Baptist University and a master's degree from Abilene Christian University. Prior to retiring in 1996, I held several executive positions with the City, including responsibilities for public transportation in Dallas and D/FW Airport and operations of the Municipal Court and Detention Center. "After retiring, my wife Sherry (Sunset Class of 1969) and I moved to Nacogdoches, in East Texas. There, we built a house, did some traveling, and opened a gift shop on the downtown square. We enjoyed the quite country life for many years, but in 2006, family circumstances required that we return to the Dallas area. Bored with retirement, I accepted a position with the Cedar Hill Police Department investigating crime scenes and assisting victims. "As with many of our classmates, my life has had a few ups and downs, including a divorce in 1976. Sherry and I were married in 1981 and we have had a wonderful life together. In 2009, we bought a second home in South Fork, Colorado, where we have enjoyed vacationing for many years. There, we plan to spend as much time as possible after I retire again next year (2011)." |
