After graduation Betty spent the summer at Camp Whispering Cedars with young girls as she had done for all the summers she can remember. Betty, like all of us, was preparing to enter college and begin the first phase of "the rest of my life"! She spent her freshman year at Southwestern University where she enjoyed the atmosphere of a small liberal arts college and made some great friends. "The environment there was wonderful, but for many reasons I soon felt I needed a change."

Betty transferred to Texas Tech the next year and really enjoyed being a Red Raider and all the excitement on campus. Her brother-in-law was the baseball coach there and encouraged her to become a PE major. "Well, those of you who know me know I am not athletically inclined! It was not long until I switched my major to Speech and Hearing Pathology. I really enjoyed working with the children and adults in this field." She received her degree in Special Education from Tech in 1970, as a speech and hearing pathologist.

Betty married shortly after graduation and moved to Roswell, New Mexico. The climate there was wonderful and country was beautiful. She began her career in teaching at a Middle School. After living there two years some opportunities opened up in Texas and the Garton family moved home. They settled in Joshua, Texas and Betty taught school in Burleson. She enrolled in graduate school at TCU and obtained a M.Ed. in August, 1975.

In December, their first child was born. Jennifer was a great joy. Their second child, Todd, was born in April, 1978. Betty really enjoyed her time as a "stay-at-home" mom. When Jennifer and Todd started to school Betty went back, too!

Betty is currently the Preschool Director at The Oakridge School in Arlington, Texas, where she has been for 20 years. Jennifer and Todd both graduated from Oakridge. It is a college prep school that begins with 3 year olds and goes through 12th grade. Jennifer went to The University of Oklahoma and is currently teaching Kinderarten in Arlington. She married her best friend, Chris Reed in 1997. Todd is almost a Senior at Texas A & M and doing well. "I am very fortunate to have the two best friends of my life as children!"

After 25 years of marriage, Betty became divorced. However, she is still alive and well! "Life has been good to me and I have experienced much and learned more. I look forward to all that is yet to come. I have aspirations of someday pursuing a Doctorate in Educational Psychology. I am still intrigued with the wonderings of human behavior and want to learn more so I can help more."

"My life motto has always been 'Love learning and learn Loving'. I wish you all well. God Bless."
