George Flynn has devoted most of his adult life to reaffirming Kaye Thornton's original premise that he wasn't worth a damn in journalism. After becoming inspired by the chants of the anti-war demonstrators in the late '60s -- ("Write On, WRITE ON!") he served as editor of the North Texas Daily at the University of North Texas in Denton.

Then there was a year at the Fort Worth Press tabloid, followed by a decade at the Houston Post as a reporter, writer and editor. Flynn kept those duties when he relocated to the San Diego Union-Tribune in the Lotus Land of San Diego in '80. Thirteen years after that (and a losing battle on behalf of the San Diego Newspaper Guild), he went to work in news for the Houston Chronicle.

For the past four years, he's been a feature writer (now managing editor) of the Houston Press, the sister publication of New Times' Dallas Observer.

On the home front, there have been two divorces, with the only child still being himself. Flynn spends his spare time pursuing seniors' softball and trying to keep an '80 BMW motorcycle running.

Two days before Osama's crew dropped in at the Pentagon, Flynn met George Bush in the White House (for the National Book Festival). And does anybody else marvel at just how much Earl Killough looked like Richard Nixon?
