John graduated from Texas Tech in 1971, with a BS in Civil Engineering. He worked in the petroleum/nuclear industry for about 6 years, living in Memphis, Baton Rouge, Houston and a lot of small bergs along the Louisiana/Texas oil patch. In 1977, he took a year off to build a rock cabin on the Blanco River in the Texas Hill Country. This was interrupted by a consulting job off and on for 1 1/2 years in Perth, Western Australia. Eventually, he sold the Hill Country place, moved to Houston and developed a private engineering practice.

In 1989, John moved to Brenham and bought 41 acres about 15 miles out of Brenham ("I'm half way between Brenham and Burton, pop. 300, but confusingly am located in the Burton mail zone"). He tried commuting to Houston the first year or so, then finally moved his office to Brenham.

John rescued an old 110 year old German farmhouse being used as a barn, cut it in half, moved it 5 miles to his place, and restored it over a 5 year period. In 1997, he obtained an 1850 Missouri log cabin (i.e. skeleton of hewn logs), took a year to restore it, then moved his office to the cabin in 1998 (it also doubles as a guesthouse). The cabin is nestled in the woods on the edge of a 3 acre bass pond about 200 yards from the house. "These days most of my work is handled on a remote basis so trips to Houston are rare."

"In and around all of the above, I had two marriages the less said about the better. In '96, I married Gay (her name, not her lifestyle), definite keeper. Gay has a counseling practice split between Brenham and College Station."

John has two daughters living in Austin. Leisha is 26 and just graduated from UT. Carley is 24 and goes to Austin Community College. He also has a grandson Wesley, who was 3 on the 4th of July.
